The Crown Estates and Crown Meadows Estates subdivisions sit on the western edge of Redding, California, where neighborhoods meet wildland. This area, home to more than 250 households, faces growing wildfire risks due to dry vegetation, wind exposure, and proximity to open space. Like many in Shasta County, our community is awakening to the need for proactive and collective action.
We are working together to become a certified Firewise Community through the National Fire Protection Association. This effort is more than a designation. It is a commitment to reducing wildfire risk through education, preparation, and defensible space. As neighbors, we are learning how to manage fuels, harden homes, and support each other in creating a more fire-adapted landscape.
With continued collaboration and outreach, Crown Estates and Crown Meadows are taking meaningful steps toward a safer future. Firewise recognition is just the beginning.

What is a Firewise Community?
The Firewise USA® program, developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), helps communities learn how to live safely with wildfire. It encourages neighbors to work together to reduce wildfire risk through simple, practical actions—like clearing defensible space, trimming vegetation, and making homes more fire-resistant. Any neighborhood committed to reducing wildfire risk can become a recognized Firewise Community.
Firewise recognition must be renewed each year. To remain in good standing, communities report wildfire risk reduction work, including the time and money residents have invested in activities like defensible space maintenance, home hardening, and community projects. This shared effort shows ongoing commitment and helps keep your neighborhood safer.
